Newsletter October 2025 | Volume 10
The three-year HORIZON EUROPE EuroGO-SHIP seeks to enable the European community conducting ship-based hydrographic observations at sea to provide higher quality and more sustainable data flows to a broad range of end users, more effectively. The project is funded under the call HORIZON-INFRA-2022-DEV-01-01: Research infrastructure concept development and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee [grant number 10051458, 10068242, 10068528].
A Note from our Coordinator
Dear All,
EuroGO-SHIP is returning to harbour, metaphorically, after its three year journey at the end of November. It has been a busy quarter for the team as we have been refining our vision for the scope of a future EuroGO-SHIP Research Infrastructure, basing its services on the needs of the ship-based hydrography community in Europe. This vision will be reflected in our report: D5.2 Summary of the range of possible RI structures, with preferred option, and we will be articulating it at the Final Event in Brussels in early November, as well as in our last newsletter, which will be published at the end of November. So please stay tuned to hear about it in the next issue.
We have also been very busy developing our instructional videos and presentations as part of the project’s Key Exploitable Results, which follow on from our pilot activities focussed on advancing best practices. You can read a little more about those in our feature article. I’d also like to put a spotlight on a new success story we are sharing in this issue about the consultations the EuroGO-SHIP team has had with the Black Sea hydrographer community.
Finally, I’d just like to thank all the participants of our various stakeholder consultation activities throughout the project. The enthusiasm and level of support has helped us understand the needs of our shared community and its dedication to delivering high quality ocean observations, and has contributed towards the success we’ve had in achieving the important objectives of EuroGO-SHIP.
Kind regards,
Dr. Elaine McDonagh

EuroGO-SHIP’s Key Exploitable Results
Tips and Tricks to Advance Best Practices
Best Practices are a key component of the vision for a future EuroGO-SHIP Research Infrastructure as they harmonise activities across fragmented communities working in different nations to produce data that is comparable, as well as contributing towards a streamlined and more efficient delivery of data.
As part of the project, critical activities were selected as test cases to advance best practices—to create referenced and standardised procedures—in pursuit of high quality, accurate data. These pilots were conducted by the consortium’s subject matter experts and the results have been transformed into training material and helpful tools.
EuroGO-SHIP is pleased to roll-out a series of recorded webinars, instructional videos and useful tools. These items are part of the project’s Key Exploitable Results and are available on the project website, and will also be available on Zenodo over the coming weeks.
- Tutorial: Interactive open-source tool for QC1 on Hydrographic Cruise Data
- Instructional Video: Ocean salinity analysis practices: How to get the most out of bottle salinity samples
- Numerical Modelling Description – Assessing statistical features of time series through Trend Detection Time method

Please be sure to visit the Key Exploitable Result page on our website over the next month as we publish more tips, techniques and procedures based on our pilots to improve the quality and accuracy of hydrographic data.
Re-connecting the Black Sea Hydrographer Community
A EuroGO-SHIP Success Story
by Teodor Mușat
In the early 2000’s, the Black Sea GOOS (Global Ocean Observing System) facilitated healthy collaboration among groups conducting ship-based hydrography in six riparian nations – Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Romania. However, its dissolution, circa 2005, left the community fragmented, operating without the advantages of a shared platform for exchanging knowledge and resources.
In June 2023, EuroGO-SHIP reconnected the community when we held The Black Sea Stakeholder Hydrographer Workshop in Constanța, Romania. This meeting was in support of the project’s objective to co-design a Research Infrastructure (RI) tailored to the needs of regional ship-based hydrographers in Europe. From this first event through other workshops and surveys, the contributions of Black Sea hydrographers provide a compelling example of how regional engagement can reinforce pan-European efforts, and served to highlight the critical importance of preserving local knowledge and technical expertise.

EMSEA Annual Meeting
Pieter Torrez (SSBE) shared the EuroGO-SHIP Ocean Literacy poster at the European Marine Science Educators’ Association (EMSEA) annual conference in Oostende in September and had a chance to discuss the importance of science education and ocean literacy with dedicated educators from around Europe and beyond.
International Research Vessel Community
Richard Sanders (NORCE) presented a talk at the International Research Vessel Community on behalf of EuroGO-SHIP, among other relative projects, promoting the important role that research vessels play in supporting our urgent need for more data to address critical gaps in our understanding of our ocean and climate change.
