EuroGO-SHIP Newsletter 9

Newsletter July 2025 | Volume 9

The three-year HORIZON EUROPE EuroGO-SHIP seeks to enable the European community conducting ship-based hydrographic observations at sea to provide higher quality and more sustainable data flows to a broad range of end users, more effectively. The project is funded under the call HORIZON-INFRA-2022-DEV-01-01: Research infrastructure concept development and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee [grant number 10051458, 10068242, 10068528].

A Note from our Coordinator

Dear All,

We are officially on the home-stretch of the EuroGO-SHIP project, which will be wrapping up at the end of November this year. I want to take a moment to thank you for your subscriptions to this newsletter and for your interest in this important project.

June kicked off with our third and final annual meeting, which was held in Helsinki. During a robust programme over a couple of days, we reviewed the immense work that went into developing our statement of requirements, and discussed the structure for a future EuroGO-SHIP Research Infrastructure, determining what the essential pillars would be, as well as fine-tuning the EuroGO-SHIP value chain. On behalf of the consortium, I’d like to put a spotlight on our partner ICOS for the incredible job they did hosting the annual meeting and keeping everything running smoothly.

In this volume, you will find a video showcasing our best-practice for water sampling, a short summer read from Yvonne Firing and a summary of our annual meeting.

If you have any feedback or questions, we are interested in hearing from you and welcome your comments. Please write to us here.

On the Banks of the Baltic: Annual Meeting 2025

For the third and final time, members of the consortium gathered in Helsinki for the project annual meeting and general assembly. From meeting rooms to nature walks and talks along the wooded banks of the sea, the team had a productive couple of days. We unpacked the four pillars of the EuroGO-SHIP Statement of Requirements to define the core of the project’s offer as well as mapping its value chain toward  building an effective pathway for delivering the requirements so carefully defined through pilots and consultations with ship-based hydrographers, networks, RIs and end-users over the past 2.5 years. The diverse set of skills and expertise of our consortium derives from years of experience in the area of scientific research encompassing ship-based hydrography, including sampling analysis and processing, quality control, data processing, software publishing, best practice methodologies, facility and equipment management, as well as expertise in scientific project management. All the right ingredients to define the ideal infrastructure in support of services that deliver much-needed high-quality marine data.

Check out our slideshows to see the dedicated team in action.

Next up for EuroGO-SHIP is the final event where the project’s success will be summarized and future plans discussed. Stay tuned to learn more.

The Pursuit of Best Practices and Quality Control

Yvonne Firing (NOC) shares some thoughts on the challenges of defining best practices, especially when it comes to comparing procedures to determine the right techniques and the correct order of steps; she also discusses the good synergies and benefits that have arisen from EuroGO-SHIP’s partners working together over the last three years. Pour yourself a nice cold glass of something and tuck into this friendly summer scannable. Then check out the video below, for an example of an extremely helpful best practice from more of our amazing team. Read more.

Splash into our latest Water Sampling Best Practice video to master the right steps and techniques for quality results. EuroGO-SHIP colleagues Marta Álvarez (IEO), Caroline Cusack (MI) and Emill Jeansson (NORCE) share their expertise in this bite-size lesson with a sustainable wash. See it below and if you’d like more information on the why and when, find it here.

EuroGO-SHIP at European GeoScience Union General Assembly 2025

Developing a concept for an ocean observing research infrastructure.

Elaine McDonagh (NORCE) presented at the annual EGU this year, discussing how the project has been developing the concept for an ocean observation research infrastructure. She highlighted key insights regarding how addressing the gaps identified in the hydrography value chain in Europe can lead to a material improvement in our ability to measure and respond to key societal issues and how the services needed to do this can be sustained in the next generation of RI construction.

💦Making the science case for EuroGO-SHIP through numerical modelling💦

Houda Beghoura (UIB) prepared a pico recording for EGU screening, based on the work in Deliverbable  4.1 💦 Making the science case for EuroGO-SHIP through numerical modelling ⚖️

The study focussed on how expected improvements in data quality and coverage will enable a better assessment of trends in ocean nutrient changes, deoxygenation and acidification, following the implementation of a EuroGO-SHIP research infrastructure (RI). These are key marine health indicators as defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. For more, read D4.1

European Maritime Day

This year’s EMD was held in Cork, Ireland and the Marine Institute hosted EuroGO-SHIP at its stand, streaming our videos and providing outreach to interested stakeholders.
