A EuroGO-SHIP Key Exploitable Result
Ocean salinity analysis practices:
How to get the most out of bottle salinity samples
Instructional Video
Accurate and consistent measurements of salinity are essential for understanding the ocean’s role in climate, ecosystems, and human activities. As part of EuroGO-SHIP’s aim to advance best practices, a pilot evaluation was held to demonstrate how the quality of hydrographic data can be improved by following the described process, and an instructional video has been produced as part of the project’s Key Exploitable Results.
The full pilot is described in this report: Report on Updated Salinity Best Practice.
Insights and information are also available in a harmonised blog: The Pursuit of Best Practices and Quality Control.

Presented by Dr. Yvonne Firing
Yvonne is a physical oceanographer at the National Oceanography Centre in the U.K. She specialises in making in situ observations, particularly from ships, and using them to measure and understand ocean dynamics on a range of scales. In the EuroGO-SHIP project, her work focussed on expanding secondary quality control and serving as the salinity parameter expert to gather evidence on the effect of practical differences in procedures toward developing a framework for an updated salinity measurement best practice of which this tutorial supports.
