EuroGO-SHIP Newsletter 6

Newsletter October 2024 | Volume 6

The three-year HORIZON EUROPE EuroGO-SHIP seeks to enable the European community conducting ship-based hydrographic observations at sea to provide higher quality and more sustainable data flows to a broad range of end users, more effectively. The project is funded under the call HORIZON-INFRA-2022-DEV-01-01: Research infrastructure concept development.

A Note from our Coordinator

Dear All,

EuroGO-SHIP has sailed through the summer into the autumn with a sharp focus on the exercise of fine tuning a total of 12 deliverables and six milestones due over the next few months. This November marks the end of the second year of our three year project. During the past two summers, we have held our annual meeting at the Black Sea (Constanța, Romania) and the Mediterranean Sea (Venice, Italy). These locations were strategically planned to provide consortium members the opportunity for stakeholder engagement with regional hydrographers serving European seas. We are looking forward to our third and final Annual Meeting and General Assembly to be held next June on the Baltic Sea in Helsinki, Finland.

In our next issue, we will share many insights from the important assessment activities and best practice pilots we have been engaged in to ensure we are taking the right steps towards enhancing ocean observation and in understanding the needs of hydrographers around Europe. We will also have a success story to share, as well as updates on how we will spend our final year. In the meantime, please enjoy reading some quotes from the Research Infrastructure Workshop we held this past summer, and learning about the Pen Pictures that WP4 has been building to get a picture of hydrography operations in Europe.

We are interested in hearing from you, and welcome your feedback and comments. Please write to us here.

Kind regards,

Dr. Elaine McDonagh
EuroGO-SHIP Project Coordinator

Research Infrastructure Workshop – What we Heard them Say

The goal of EuroGO-SHIP is to shape a new Research Infrastructure and to contribute to a better alignment of the development of the existing Research Infrastructure landscape, with the advancement of excellent science and frontier research. As part of this objective, we hosted a RI Workshop this past summer in Venice (Get a full overview of organisations represented here). The event was not only an opportunity for EuroGO-SHIP to define its place in the Marine Science RI landscape but also an unprecedented opportunity for participants to come together and discuss the wider system of European marine science services. Judging from the comments below, the event was highly valued by its participants.

“I was very happy to attend the EuroGO-SHIP workshop because it was a good way to meet other RI representatives. We had good exchanges to discuss possible joint services, and express our ideas. I think EuroGO-SHIP is a good opportunity for research infrastructure in the marine domain to discuss gaps in terms of services.”
Ingrid Puillat
General Director of EMSO ERIC

“I’m very glad to have been invited to this workshop because, as it’s been said, it’s the first of its kind with (many) marine research infrastructures together and looking at the specific contributions that we could make with EuroGO-SHIP. It was also a very good occasion to really think together how to really have the best synergy, and how we should evolve in the future.”
Yann-Hervé De Roeck

“I was excited today because the EuroGO-SHIP workshop provided the opportunity to get together with other research infrastructures. And this identified the need for us to exchange more, and to evaluate how we can work together.”
Joanna Voynova

“It was a very valuable day because, for a long time I’d not had the opportunity to have discussions with other research infrastructure…The discussion was very rich.”
Laurent Delauney
IFremer, JERICO coordinator, EOS operation committee chair

“Today’s workshop was quite interesting for us because it brings in a lot of views from different actors and stakeholders into the marine domain discussion, and we have discussed what implications there will be for EuroGO-SHIP when it becomes an RI, and how it will fit into the current landscape of the marine infrastructures.”
Emmanuel Salmon
WP5 Lead, ICOS

“This meeting was an excellent opportunity to see how these different RIs work together to create this network that we need for Europe to have sustainable, reliable information on the ocean parameters. And it is also really important to have this exchange between the RIs to get an idea of how we can optimise things, where we can collaborate…it was a very nice and interesting experience.”
Holger Brix
Helmholtz Centrum Hereon, representing JERICO and EuroGOOS

Pen Pictures Workshops: Learning how hydrography is conducted across Europe

EuroGO-SHIP’s Work Package 4 is tasked with assembling the science case for a strategic investment in supporting European ship-based hydrographic work. In recent months, WP4 colleagues have been building a picture of how hydrography is conducted and how it operates across Europe by developing a series of ‘pen pictures’. Read more.
